A highly complex machine.. fitted with seemingly ultra modern gadgets.. get into it, set a desired date and time and press a large green button.. BHOOM.. you time travelled to wherever you like.. past, present or future.. simple..!
This is what science fiction movies has shown us for long.
Many things labelled as science fiction of the past has been a reality today. But a time travel is never going to be a reality. This is because the concept of time travel possess serious self contrary problems.
Consider a simple form of time machine that can show the future on a large TV screen. Using this machine, you can see what you will do in the future. Using this machine, you saw that you will go to the office the next day wearing a RED shirt. Now you know that you are going to wear a RED shirt tomorrow. But you intentionally wore a BLUE shirt and went to the office the next day. Hence you proved that the results shown by your time machine was wrong. Whatever happened in the future was not as shown by the machine.
Since we knew the future, we made some changes now to alter it. Hence what happened in the future is not what we have known before. So a time machine can always end up showing wrong results.
Of-course a machine that can show the past can be devised. A video camera is an example for this. It can show whatever that has happened in the past. Using live streaming, things that have happened a fraction of a second before present can be shown. As technology develops, the value of this fraction can be reduced.
So a device that can show the past and at most the present can be made possible but never the future.
